Energy operator

Identity reserved at the client’s request.

One of the leading private operators in the free market for electricity and gas in Italy, with around one million customers and an installed generation capacity of several gigawatts across renewable sources and high-efficiency plants. Alongside generation, it offers a platform of energy services for individuals and businesses, with a model oriented towards digital innovation and sustainability.

The industry scenario

In 2025 Private Cloud is the fastest-growing component of the Italian cloud market (+23%), driven by demand for data control and by regulatory requirements; 46% of the very largest organisations now adopt hybrid, selective strategies.

Challenge

Infrastructure evolution for sustainable growth

Operating in the free energy market means managing an expanding customer portfolio, a base of geographically distributed sites and services with strong operational criticality. The operator therefore had a structural need: to modernise its technology architecture in order to enable business growth, guarantee operational continuity even in failure scenarios and strengthen a security perimeter exposed to increasingly sophisticated threats and growing regulatory requirements.

Areas of intervention

The challenge was structured around four strategic areas of intervention:

Infrastructure scalability and modularity

The existing infrastructure offered no room for growth without risks of congestion. A modular, distributed model was needed, able to absorb the increase in compute and storage loads in line with the expansion of the customer portfolio.

Operational continuity and disaster recovery

Managing distributed sites required physical and logical redundancy to ensure service availability in the event of a fault. Given the criticality of energy processes, tolerance for disruptions had to be kept to a minimum.

Intelligent connectivity and traffic optimisation

Traditional routing did not allow granular control of application traffic between sites and towards the cloud. A network was needed that could adapt dynamically to business needs and reduce the latency of critical applications.

Managed security and unified governance

Perimeter protection, access control, data segregation and event correlation had to be orchestrated from a single vision, capable at the same time of meeting growing regulatory standards on data protection and cyber resilience.

Retelit's solution

A hybrid ICT infrastructure, managed end-to-end

Retelit designed and built a hybrid data center architecture — physical hosting in carrier-grade data centers and private cloud as-a-service — alongside software-defined networking, all-flash storage and managed security, able to support business growth and guarantee operational continuity on a national scale.

Services activated and technologies

Data Center & Private Cloud

Carrier-grade hosting and private cloud as-a-service

Hosting in carrier-grade data centers in Milan, with redundant power, advanced cooling and ISO 27001 compliance. On top, a dedicated IaaS private cloud with virtualisation clusters for mission-critical workloads and all-flash storage with deduplication and replication, for high performance and TCO optimisation.

Networking & Connectivity

MPLS VPN architecture, SD-WAN and cloud interconnections

A wide-area network redesigned on managed MPLS VPN and SD-WAN, with differentiated access (dedicated fibre, FTTC, wireless) and redundant configurations. SD-WAN dynamically optimises application traffic and enables the rapid activation of new sites; direct interconnections to the main public clouds open up low-latency multicloud scenarios.

Managed security & Governance

Perimeter protection and centralised monitoring

A perimeter protected by next-generation firewalls with IDS/IPS, application control and VPN, always-on Anti-DDoS protection and log correlation for continuous detection and response. Centralised monitoring, end-to-end management of LAN and Wi-Fi and IT Service Management platforms ensure single-pane visibility and reduced intervention times.

Results

A scalable, resilient infrastructure for the growth of the energy business

The operator now has a modern ICT platform, able to support the expansion of its customer portfolio and to guarantee operational continuity in all scenarios.

Growth supported: a modular, scalable infrastructure, with rapid provisioning and the activation of new sites without architectural redesigns.
Operational continuity: redundant environments, dual-feed power, geographical replication and disaster recovery keep services available even in the event of a failure.
Application performance: SD-WAN, advanced QoS and direct cloud interconnections reduce latency between sites and towards critical applications.
Unified governance: proactive detection and response, centralised visibility over network and security, lower operational complexity and faster resolution times.
