National broadcaster: redundant security and voice systems

High-availability firewalls, fiber-optic links with diversified routes, and 2,000 phone numbers migrated to a SIP trunk redundant across two data centers: broadcast continuity is safeguarded at every level.

National broadcaster

National television and radio broadcaster

Media & Entertainment

One of Italy’s leading broadcasters manages television and radio production through a network of facilities located throughout the country, operating 24 hours a day.
Broadcasting requires high security standards for systems, networks, and communications, supporting a business with revenue exceeding 1 billion euros.

The Industry Landscape

In 2025, 507 serious cyber incidents were reported in Italy, a 42% increase from the previous year: 9.6% of all incidents detected worldwide. Nearly four out of ten were attributable to hacktivism, which aims to disrupt service delivery.

CHALLENGE

Protecting Production Without Ever Interrupting Broadcasts

In television production, cybersecurity has a direct impact on service: a system outage immediately results in a broadcast interruption. The broadcaster must upgrade its fleet of firewalls dedicated to production cybersecurity, a perimeter vulnerable to DDoS attacks.

Industry Context

54%

of incidents in Italy are DDoS attacks (first half of 2025)

9%

the global share of DDoS attacks during the same period

AREAS OF FOCUS

The challenges addressed were organized around four strategic dimensions:

Firewalls to be renewed

The firewall fleet of the Technology division dedicated to production cybersecurity requires a complete overhaul.

DDoS Exposure

DDoS attacks are the most common type of attack in Italy, accounting for 54% of incidents in the first half of 2025.

Voice Migration

Approximately 2,000 analog phone numbers to be migrated to a high-availability SIP trunk.

Continuity Across Two Sites

The phone numbers must remain active at two production sites without compromising security or continuity.

SOLUTIONS

A single infrastructure, with redundancy at every level

Retelit works on three levels of the broadcaster’s infrastructure: perimeter security, networking and voice, within a single, cohesive architecture.

Security

High-Availability Firewall

Forcepoint security appliances in a high-availability (HA) configuration, supported by professional services for design, configuration, and deployment. The HA pair protects the perimeter even in the event of a node failure or maintenance.

Connectivity

Fiber Optics with Diversified Routes

The network is based on fiber-optic cables with diversified routes, so no single point of failure can isolate the production facilities. The project is integrated into the backbone already managed by Retelit for the broadcaster’s network.

Voice

SIP trunk with redundancy across two data centers

The voice infrastructure is redundant across two geographically separate Retelit data centers to ensure that phone numbers remain active even in the event of a service disruption at one of the two sites.

Governance

A cohesive architecture, a single point of contact

Networking, security, and voice converge into a single architecture with a single point of contact, making the entire perimeter easier to manage.

The Results

Continuity and Security, Designed Together

The renewal of the security perimeter and the migration of voice services never interrupted broadcasting: continuity and protection are designed together, on a single infrastructure.

Protected and always-on perimeter: production security remains operational even during failures or maintenance on one of the devices.

Modernized voice: 2,000 phone numbers migrated from analog to SIP trunking, on an infrastructure with redundancy across two data centers.

A network with no single points of failure: diversified fiber routes reduce the risk that an outage could isolate production sites.

A single point of contact: Retelit manages the network, security, and voice services on a single architecture, simplifying IT governance for the broadcaster.
