Enterprise digital services operator

Enabling infrastructure for the growth of managed services.

A leading Italian operator in the system integration and managed digital services segment, the organisation delivers specialised expertise in systems integration and cybersecurity to enterprise clients and public administrations. The growth of its managed services called for a scalable infrastructure, while preserving a distributed architecture and direct operational control.

The industry scenario

According to the Cloud Transformation Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, in 2025 hybrid on-premises and cloud infrastructures remain business-critical for 73% of Italian system integrators, requiring dedicated interconnections and a local operational presence.

Challenge

Distributed infrastructure and centralised governance

According to the Cloud Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, in 2025 the Italian market for cloud services and managed infrastructures grew by 18% year on year, with digital-services integrators moving towards hybrid infrastructures able to guarantee centralised governance and directly controllable operating margins.
For a system integrator that delivers managed services to enterprise clients, infrastructure capacity is a competitive asset. The company needed to consolidate its expansion in a dedicated data center environment able to combine scale and operational proximity: much of the market offering targets large standardised volumes, whereas here the priority was direct control over resources, interconnection with existing assets and guaranteed intervention times.

Areas of intervention

The operator faced four critical areas in order to support growth without operational compromise:

Flexible infrastructure capacity

The managed services required scalable computing space with no immediate footprint constraints. The growth of the customer base demanded the ability to expand available capacity quickly, while still allowing investments to be sized against real demand.

Direct operational control

The geographical dispersion of the company’s sites required an interconnected architecture that could still be governed as a single environment. The operator needed to retain direct control over its infrastructure assets and the configuration of its proprietary network.

Continuity and risk reduction

The managed services delivered to enterprise and public-administration clients could not tolerate interruptions. Reliance on remote interventions had to be reduced through a dedicated operational presence and efficient support logistics.

Energy visibility and planning

The growth of computing capacity required precise visibility over energy consumption to enable efficiency choices and reliable forecasts of future infrastructure needs.

Solutions

An integrated response that brings together infrastructure, network and managed services.

To meet the company’s needs, Retelit designed a solution that combines dedicated high-density space, interconnection over its proprietary network and managed operational services, within a Retelit data center in the Milan metropolitan area. A single environment, governed with proximity and direct control.

Housing and infrastructure

A dedicated high-density cage with power and space sized for growth

Set-up of a cage in a Retelit data center with redundant power supply and a rack density suited to supporting the expansion of the client’s managed services with no immediate footprint constraints. The configuration allows the progressive integration of corporate assets within a controlled, monitored environment.

Interconnection and continuity

Dedicated cross-connects and dark fibre over Retelit's proprietary network

Direct connection of the client’s distributed environments through private interconnection over the Retelit infrastructure, creating a unified architecture with reduced latency and reduced reliance on public services. The isolation of the fibre ensures operational continuity and direct control over the network topology.

Managed operational services

On-site presence, dedicated logistics and precise consumption visibility

On-site operational presence, reserved workspaces and a granular energy-consumption monitoring service per individual PDU through a web interface, reducing reliance on remote interventions and enabling informed decisions on efficiency and capacity planning.

Results

An infrastructure foundation that supports the growth of managed services.

The integrated solution enabled the consolidation of the system integrator’s infrastructure capacity, keeping the distributed architecture under direct operational control.

Infrastructure capacity sized for the growth of managed services, with no immediate footprint constraints and with expansion headroom already defined.

Unified governance of distributed sites through dedicated interconnection over a proprietary network, eliminating operational fragmentation and reducing coordination latency.

On-site presence and dedicated logistics consolidated operational continuity, minimising reliance on remote interventions and speeding up the resolution of infrastructure issues.

Granular monitoring of energy consumption per distribution point, providing precise visibility in support of operational efficiency and future capacity planning.
